The St. Thomas Story
This breathtaking Caribbean city boasts approximately half of the population of the Virgin Islands, which attracts millions of tourists a year from around the world. In addition to having the second-to-the-oldest synagogue in the US, St. Thomas has approximately 500 Jewish residents and countless Jewish tourists at any given time. There is an active Chabad and many amenities for Jewish tourists, including minyanim and kosher food availability. However, unfortunately there is no mikvah anywhere nearby; the closest ones are in Florida, a plane ride away. A handful of the most devoted religious residents and tourists use the ocean at one of the local beaches. However, the size of the ocean and frequent storms have not only made it virtually impossible to attract new users; several previous users have stopped keeping taharah as well. A new local mikvah will reverse this trend and be highly welcomed by residents and tourist alike.
