The Old Westbury Story
This Long Island village is located in an area with approximately 10,000 Jews. There are strong pockets of anti-Semitism amongst the local non-Jewish populace and municipal government, which made the mikvah building process particularly difficult. The village prided itself on not having issued a permit for a Jewish community building in seventy five years. That changed when Rabbi Aaron Konikov sued the village for discrimination and won the right to build a mikvah. Previously, the closest mikvah was in Merrick – also a Mikvah USA project – but even some observant locals did not travel the distance. With a beautiful new mikvah complete, even many locals who did not previously observe taharah have been dipping their toes in the mikvah waters. Nothing and nobody can stem the rising tide of taharah in Old Westbury!
