The Havana Story
There is a small community of Shomrei Torah U’Mitzvos in the capital of this isolated communist country; as well as Jews in surrounding cities and a steady influx of Jewish tourists. There is currently no mikvah in the entire country other than the sea, which makes it difficult to observe Tahara, let alone attract new users. Rabbi Shimon Aisenbach leads the local Chabad remotely from Toronto, as it is virtually impossible to establish permanent residence in Cuba. He is working closely with Mikvah USA to build a proper mikvah in Havana, despite the many inherent hurdles. More than just boosting Tahara, a mikvah in Havana will b’ezras Hashem give the impoverished and remote community a burst of optimism and a sense of “rebirth.”
